“Deadpool 2” Popular With Older Adults

Some interesting news about Deadpool 2, which is finding continued success not only from the younger set, but also from adults who are 50 and older.

This information comes from Movio, a site for film analytics, about 70 percent of viewers were in the 14-30 demographic when the film first came out, but have since only counted for about 51 percent of its total audience. Meanwhile, about half of the audience was 50 or older during the movie’s first 17 days.

The general consensus: parents did not take their kids to see the movie, which is rated R for violence and raunchy comedy. But hey, the teenagers’ loss doesn’t need to keep those same parents (and maybe even grandparents?) from having a little fun, right?

Deadpool 2 came out on May 18, and is now passing the $300 million domestic box office mark after six weeks in theaters. On the one hand, that is an impressive feat—only a handful of other R-rated movies have reached that goal, the original Deadpool among them. Then again, it managed it after only four weeks, and sequels generally make more than their predecessors. The second movie is unlikely to make the $363 million domestic haul of the first film.

To be fair, Deadpool 2 had some stiff competition. Solo: A Star Wars Story came out during its second weekend (likely explaining its 65 percent drop, which is relatively low given the first movie’s 57 percent), while Avengers: Infinity War has been a juggernaut slow to stop raking in the cash. Currently having made $697 million worldwide with a great chance of passing $700 million, Fox has every reason to be happy with the film’s success.

A spin-off of their X-Men franchise, the movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, a lovably insane mercenary who knows that he’s in a movie and can heal from just about any injury. He winds up forming a team called X-Force to protect a boy named Russell (Julian Dennison) from Cable (Josh Brolin), a time-traveling soldier from the future.

It is not clear if there will be a Deadpool 3, but there are plans for an X-Force spin-off that will feature Deadpool, assuming that this whole plan is not stymied by Disney’s plan to acquire the property.
