Living With ADHD

There are more diagnosed cases of ADHD in the U.S. than ever before. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 11 percent of children ages 4 to 17 have the disorder. About 8 million adults also struggle with ADHD, but symptoms usually appear in early childhood.

They are twice as likely to be suspended from school and three times as likely to drop out.

The Drawbacks of Medication

Of the approximately 6.4 million children who have ADHD, 85 percent take stimulants to manage it. Scientists aren’t exactly sure how they work or why they are effective for some patients but not others. Hitting on the right type and dosage is difficult. The process is usually one of trial and error.

Around 20 to 30 percent of patients have health issues that prevent them from taking the drugs.

Some patients experience negative side effects like loss of appetite, insomnia and headaches. A small percentage develop anxiety or social isolation. Many patients describe feeling like they have two separate personalities, one when they’re taking the medication and a completely different one when they’re not. Since the drugs are stimulants, there is great potential for abuse among teens and college students.

Even when they work as intended with no side effects, medications merely alleviate symptoms without addressing the root causes of ADHD.

The Process for New Clients

New clients at Neurocore are asked to complete a detailed questionnaire. The intake process then moves to a series of tests:

• Brainwave Analysis

Brain cells communicate with one another by means of electrical impulses 24/7. The brain is active even during sleep. In an electroencephalogram test, small, flat metal discs called electrodes are attached to the scalp. They detect and chart electrical activity, which shows up as wavy lines on an EEG recording. The EEG exposes problem areas.

• Heart Rate Variability

The HRV test measures heart rate and breathing patterns. The respiratory and cardiovascular systems should be functioning in coordination with each other for good brain health.

• Integrated Visual and Auditory Continuous Performance Test

The computerized IVA test is designed to detect attention disorders. Sensory processing, impulsivity and attention are measured.

• Behavioral Checklist

The Child Behavior Checklist and the Adult Self-Report provide the clinical specialist with a detailed profile of symptoms, social concerns and emotional health issues. A clinical intake discussion is also conducted.

Feeling blue

The brain diagnostic assessment lasts two hours. A specialist reviews the results with the client the same day. Using these diagnostic tools, the clinician can target specific problem areas and design a unique treatment plan. Thirty 45-minute sessions are scheduled.

Neurocore is the creation of Timothy G. Royer, a licensed psychologist with a master’s degree in theology. Second, treatment is meant to have lifelong results. Prescribed stimulants may be effective for a time, but they eventually wear off. Also, kids usually take breaks from the medication on weekends and in summer. Many adults try to altogether wean from medication. Symptoms reappear when the drugs are withdrawn.
